Chapter Three Silent Cry

“I thought thou would play the lyre for me

But I’m taken from my land and family

I was tricked, kidnapped and taken away

Robbed from my marriage and fiancé

I am a daughter taken away on a ship

Captured, beaten and even denied of dignity.”

Those were the words that Mikayla first comprehended as she woke up with a terrible headache, her mind foggy. All around her was blurred as if dust had filled the girl’s eyes, and everything seemed to be garbled as if she had cotton stuffed in her ears. Mikayla tried to open her eyes again, but she felt as if heavy weights were pressed on them. Yet she could feel a bitter taste on her tongue. Her head was hurting her and thumping in time with the hasty beatings of her heart. Mikayla tried to stand up and see where she was, but dazzled, she couldn’t even retain her balance. She felt a drug running through her veins. She couldn’t even figure out where she was, or maybe she didn't want to be scared with what she saw around her. Again, Mikayla raised her eyes slowly to look around in bewilderment. It was a room, but at the same time, it was uncomfortably large. It didn’t look familiar. It was a big living room. It looked to be a fancy one, not just regarding space, but in the artwork that covered the walls too. Mikayla wondered if she had seen that house before, but she couldn’t remember anything. Besides, there was something strange about the room. The head of a gazelle hung on the wall. The girl had seen nothing like that in her entire life.

Mikayla scanned for any kind of clue that would help her find out where she was, but in vain. The floor was polished concrete, the walls were white, and the room was stuffed with fancy furniture. It seemed to belong to someone rich and wealthy, but it was also cold and chilly. It was scary for Mikayla, but at least her feet were not tied up anymore, which gave the girl hope. But looking at her clothes, she realized they weren’t the same. It wasn’t the same pink silk dress that she had been wearing before, but rather it was a deep red gown made of soft, satiny fabric. It was long and extremely loose, not at all Mikayla’s type. It was more like the type of gown a married woman would wear. The thought itself scared the young lady. She seemed to be in a different world from the one she used to live in. Mikayla grew anxious, feeling her body with her hands to see if anyone had laid hands on her, but heavy steps coming straight towards her interrupted her. Mikayla hurried up to see who was by the side of the door when she heard a female voice passing by.

“Surely she is the one who is spoken about? She must be the master’s new bride. What a hasty marriage. Her face and body look more than appealing to any kind of man.
